Sustainable Printing, Saving the Environment

Print is much more environmentally friendly than you would expect. In fact, print can be kinder to the environment than an e-mail! Environmentally sustainable printing is not just a goal, it is a reality.

Consider:  Australia’s per capita consumption of paper is about 200kgs p.a. which equates to 72kgs CO2 emissions per person. Compare this to operating a typical household plasma television 5 hours per day x 6 days per week. This amounts to about 450kgs of CO2 emissions in one year for a single TV.  Now consider a home computer running 24 hours a day and you can see the hidden impact of simple things like e-mail.

Printers and printing are often maligned, given the image of uncaring environmental vandals, but a little research will indicate that this is far from the truth.   Agility Print only prints on stocks meeting FSC certification.

To support sustainable printing, Agility Print also carries a range of 100% recycled stocks and are able to recommend something to suit your requirements.

These days just recycled isn’t enough.  Below are a few terms which you may encounter and some background on their importance to environmentally sustainable printing.

  • Elemental Chlorine Free: Paper made from virgin or recycled fibre which is bleached using alternatives to elemental chlorine.
  • Processed Chlorine Free: paper made with fibre recycled from post-consumer waste and unbleached or bleached without chlorine. PCF is paper generally considered most environmentally friendly.
  • Pre-Consumer Fibre: Material collected before it reaches the end user, largely offcuts from paper manufacturers, printers and converters.
  • Post-Consumer waste: Material that is collected from end-users and recycled. Post consumer fibre is the preferred form of recycled material because it reduces pressure on the remaining forests, saves water and energy and diverts solid waste from landfill.
  • Soy Ink: is made from soybeans (sometimes referred to as vegetable inks). As opposed to more traditional petroleum based ink, soy ink is more environmentally friendly, is available in brighter colours and makes it easier to recycle paper.
  • Totally Chlorine Free: Paper made from 100% virgin fibre (including alternative fibre from sources other than trees) that is unbleached or bleached with non-chlorine compounds. TCF cannot apply to recycled papers because the fibre source cannot be determined.
  • Virgin Fibre: is 100% “pure” or new fibre from an original source.
  • FSC (Forest Stewardship Council): an international non-profit organization created in 1993 following the Rio Earth Summit to change the practice of responsible forestry worldwide. The FSC Chain of Custody tracks fibre through its entire environmentally sustainable printing chain from manufacturer, merchant and printer.
